Second Grade

The difference between a successful reader and many struggling readers is PRACTICE!  Second graders should be reading to or with an adult daily.  You can find some hints and tips that you can use with your child on the  Helpful Hints section of this website.

Second grade will take the DIBELS assessment in August, December and May. (For an explanation of DIBELS visit the FAQ'S section of this website.)  In May second grade students will be expected to read 90 words per minute or better.  This is called 'benchmark'.  Which just means - they are where they are suppose to be at the end of second grade.

You can help prepare your child for DIBELS by reading with them daily.  Using the timed passages that their homeroom teachers have sent home.   Time your child for one minute.  Mark the words that he/she pronounces wrong and do not count these in the total words per minute.  After one minute count the correct words and that will be their score. It is helpful to have your child re-read the passage several time to help improve their score.  Studies have shown that children need to read a word at least 20 times before it becomes a word that they can recall immediately. (Struggling readers often need to read a word as many as 40 times.)
